Staring At The Sun

by Jess

Adam took the steps two at a time and entered the studio, letting the door shut behind him while he sipped the coffee he'd just bought.

Glancing around in the orangeish light pouring in from the windows, Adam saw signs that someone had been there for quite awhile, most likely all night.

The bassist set his coffee down on the ledge over the mixing table and ambled around it. There, slouched in a swivel chair, was a passed out Larry Mullen Jr. Adam smiled and knelt down by the arm of the chair.

"Lardence, wake up…c’mon Sleeping Beauty."

The drummer opened one blue eye, squinting warily at Adam.

"What do you want?" Larry mumbled groggily.

"To know what you're doing asleep in the studio at 8 AM."

Larry yawned and sat up. "8 AM? I've only been asleep about 45 minutes then..." he looked at his watch, “Oh…I had a bit of a row with Ann and thought I'd come in and play with some of those tracks we recorded last session…must have fallen asleep…" He looked to Adam, whose gaze was sympathetic. And disbelieving.

"Ah, Mullen...how long will you continue hiding your hurt beneath your work? You had more than a 'bit of a row' with Ann, didn't you?"

Larry sighed, standing up and stretching, “Adam, don’t start…I got a lecture from Bono yesterday about bottling things up, I don’t need one today as well.”

“Larry…you’ve always been private, but…this has been just…I mean, we KNOW something’s wrong at home. Just tell me,” Adam prodded, following Larry over to the couch.

“I’m not in the mood for this, Adam…”

“LARRY-”

“Every couple has fights, Adam!”

“Yes, but not every couple has a boyfriend who sleeps everywhere but his own house every chance he gets!”

“Adam…why are you berating me? I just bleedin’ woke up!”

“I’m not berating you, I’m just…worried about you. And so are the others…Larry, I can see the hurt in your eyes when you see Bono with Ali, how happy they are. Wishing you had something like what they have…Ann isn’t there for you, is she?”

Larry shook his head, looking down at his feet, “Please…I don’t want to ta-”

“I don’t care if you want to Larry, you NEED to,” Adam intoned, standing in front of him.

Larry looked up reluctantly and his eyes met Adam's. He swallowed, unable to look away from that penetrative gaze.

...Were Adam's eyes always that blue?

Larry stood up quickly, breaking free of Adam's intoxicating stare. But Adam stood his ground, blocking Larry’s way.

“Adam, I…I want to tell you, but…I mean, I don’t want to trouble you guys with my problems,” Larry pursed his lips, looking at Adam, “They’re MY problems.”

"Selfless…you’ve always been that way…God, I've been looking in all the wrong places..." Adam commented suddenly, vaguely.

Before Larry could ask what he meant by that, Adam had pressed his lips tightly against his own. Larry knew he should protest…Adam was KISSING him for God sakes…

But I want him to...Larry found himself thinking as Adam's hands slid around his waist and pulled him close, his fingers working themselves under his shirt. Larry returned the kiss, his tongue running along Adam's lips and his hands grabbing Adam's wrists tightly, pulling him closer. He didn't want this to end...

But Adam pulled back, breathless. He grinned at Larry, who blinked in realization of what they'd just done. He dropped his grip on Adam's wrists and took a startled step back, feeling his lips with the tip of his fingers in disbelief.

"Wow," Adam said in a low voice, "That was...wow…uhh…rather unexpected."

"Yeah…" Larry muttered, still in shock of his own wanting.

“I’m sorry, Larry,” Adam began to ramble, “I didn’t mean to and I know you’re probably horrified and I don’t know WHAT came ov-” he was cut off as Larry shook his head.

"No, no…Adam, will you stop a second?"

"What?"

"What is it that you said you'd been looking for...in all the wrong places?"

Adam swallowed, connecting eyes with Larry’s intensely crystal blue ones.

"…Love."

A sideways smile flashed across Larry’s face, "Is this what it feels like?"

“Wonderful, isn’t it?” Adam grinned.

Larry nodded silently, wrapped his arms loosely around Adam's slender neck and kissed him again. Adam moaned softly, pushing Larry back toward the couch. As Larry kissed Adam's cheek and moved gently down his throat, Adam found his voice.

"Larry...I was always here for you..."

"I know, I’m sorry…" Larry sighed, kissing him again on the mouth.

"…Then why didn't you come?"

Larry paused and met Adam's eyes. "Because you never really belonged to me...until now."

"Good enough," Adam laughed lightly with a smile, leaning in to kiss Larry again.
